April 2015

It’s been nearly six months since the last news update and there is a lot to report. Work with the American College of Surgeons and the Commission on Cancer is well-under way to create the “CoC Rectal Cancer Accreditation Program”. The Standards Committee has been appointed by the OSTRiCh Executive Committee and is currently writing the first draft of the CoC Rectal Cancer Accreditation Manual. Members of the Standards Committee are:

Co-Chairs:Dave Dietz (Cleveland Clinic)
John Monson (University of Rochester)
Members:Walt Peters (Boone Hospital Center)
Dan Herzig (Oregon Health and Sciences University
Ron Landmann (Mayo Clinic Florida)
Linda Farkas (Duke University)
Ovunc Bardakcioglu (University of Nevada)
Sam Oommen (John Muir Medical Center)

Thanks also to all who have volunteered to join the Education and Database committees. Those committees will be appointed in the very near future as preliminary discussions regarding the design of the Rectal Cancer Program Training Course have been held with the ACS Division of Education. Work is also beginning to modify the NCDB to capture the data related to the CoC Rectal Cancer Accreditation Program.

There will be a gathering of the OSTRiCh General Assembly at the upcoming meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons in Boston. An email announcement went out earlier this week. In the event that you missed it, details are below:

New Date: Saturday May 30, 2015
New Time: 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Location: Hynes Convention Center, Room 310

Regarding OSTRiCh databases, the OSTRiCh Transanal TME registry has been generously funded by the ASCRS Research Council and is currently being installed on the website. Details will be discussed by Dr. Monson at the ASCRS OSTRiCh meeting above. The OSTRiCh Rectal Cancer Registry is also nearing completion. This web-based application will allow OSTRiCh members to enter their rectal cancer cases into a database that will serve as a powerful research tool for the group. The registry will allow us to get a better understanding of the current status of rectal cancer care in the U.S., track improvements in outcomes as the Centers of Excellence program is instituted, and help guide us in the development of future policy related to the management of rectal cancer patients.

Since the last news update in June, OSTRiCh has added 39 new members. The group has now grown to 144 physically and geographically diverse institutions, all united in their desire to improve the care of U.S. rectal cancer patients (the complete listing can be found under the “Our Members” tab on the “About Us” page).
